When folks think of Myanmar -- and let’s face it, most folks don’t think of Myanmar at all-- they imagine a gentle and ancient Buddhist monastic culture; they think of a decaying relic of European colonialism; or they think of the brutally oppressive military junta that makes Myanmar one of the poorest and least free nations in the world. But there’s another side of Myanmar. In a country where rock and roll still means rebellion, Burmese kids have fashioned their own thriving indigenous metal and punk scenes with bands like Iron Cross, Big Bag, Lazy Club, Idiots, Metal Zone, Ghost Rider and many others.

It is hard to muster much pity for a numb-nuts like Shepard Fairey when he’s arrested for vandalism or sued by AP. If Shep lived up to his own hype, it might be different: but here’s a guy who, on the one hand, has made a very lucrative career out of smug condemnations of capitalism and appropriating the work of others and, on the other hand, signing big contracts with corporate clients, turning his own team of lawyers on any artist who dares to parody his own work and countersuing AP for copyright infringement (?!). When such contradictions are posed to Fairey, he defiantly claims absolution of all sins by reciting a history of charitable giving. Stinks of self-congratulatory hypocrisy and self-righteous political posturing… what a load of crap. Shepard Fairey, please go away.
